Menstrual Cycle Calculator: Ovulation & Fertility Window

Interactive tool that predicts your next period, ovulation day, and fertility window based on your cycle length. Built on standard medical rules.

The menstrual cycle is the foundation of understanding a woman's reproductive health. This tool calculates your next period, ovulation day, and fertility window with clinically validated accuracy، adjusting automatically for your cycle length and bleeding duration.

How the calculator works

The math rests on three established medical rules:

1. Predicting the next period

Next period = date of last period + cycle length (in days)

A normal cycle runs 21 to 35 days. The most common length is 28 days. Track your cycle across 3 months to find your personal average.

2. Calculating ovulation day

Ovulation day = start of next period − 14 days

This rule is more accurate than "14 days after the current period starts" because the post-ovulation phase is fixed at 14 days, while the pre-ovulation phase varies.

Examples:

  • 28-day cycle → ovulation on day 14
  • 30-day cycle → ovulation on day 16
  • 25-day cycle → ovulation on day 11

3. The fertility window

Fertility window = 5 days before ovulation + ovulation day

The science: sperm survive inside the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days, while the egg lives only 24 hours after ovulation. Intercourse several days before ovulation can therefore result in pregnancy.

The four phases of the menstrual cycle

| Phase | Days (28-day cycle) | What happens | |---|---|---| | Menstrual | 1–5 | Uterine lining sheds; hormone levels drop | | Follicular | 1–13 | Egg matures inside the ovary; estrogen rises | | Ovulation | 14 | Egg is released from the ovary into the fallopian tube | | Luteal | 15–28 | Progesterone secreted; the uterus prepares for pregnancy or menstruation |

At the end of the luteal phase:

  • If pregnancy occurs: progesterone stays elevated and menstruation is skipped.
  • If no pregnancy: progesterone falls and the period begins.

Natural signs of ovulation

You can spot ovulation through:

  1. Change in cervical mucus: becomes clear and stretchy (like egg white).
  2. Rise in basal body temperature (BBT): increases roughly 0.5°C after ovulation.
  3. Mild pain on one side of the abdomen: known as "Mittelschmerz".
  4. Increased libido: a natural effect of the LH hormone.
  5. Slight breast tenderness.
  6. Home ovulation test: detects the LH surge 24–36 hours before ovulation.

When is a cycle "abnormal"?

See a gynecologist if:

  • Missed periods for 3 consecutive months (without pregnancy)
  • Cycle length varies by more than 7–9 days month to month
  • Heavy bleeding requiring a pad change every hour
  • Severe pain unrelieved by standard pain relievers
  • Bleeding between periods on a recurring basis
  • Cycles consistently longer than 35 days
  • Cycles consistently shorter than 21 days

These signs may point to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, hormonal imbalances, or other conditions requiring diagnosis.

Can pregnancy happen outside the fertility window?

Theoretically: very rarely. Practically: yes, in these situations:

  • Irregular cycles، ovulation may occur on an unexpected day
  • Early or late ovulation caused by stress or medications
  • Double ovulation (two eggs released in one cycle)

Bottom line: the fertility window is a planning indicator, not a full guarantee.

Planning for pregnancy

For those trying to conceive:

  1. Identify your fertility window with the calculator above or a home LH test.
  2. Intercourse every other day during this window raises the odds.
  3. Take folic acid (400 micrograms daily) for 3 months before conception، it prevents neural tube defects.
  4. Consult your doctor before planning to rule out any barriers.

To avoid pregnancy

Do not rely on cycle tracking alone. Documented safe methods:

  • Hormonal pills, patches, or injections
  • Intrauterine device (copper or hormonal)
  • Male condom (protects against pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections)
  • Vaginal ring

Each method has its own success rate and specific fit، see a gynecologist to choose what suits you best.

Useful cycle-tracking apps

For long-term tracking, globally recommended apps:

  • Flo، the most widely used worldwide, supports Arabic
  • Clue، scientific interface, ad-free
  • Natural Cycles، FDA-approved
  • Ovia، for pregnancy and cycle tracking

الأسئلة الشائعة

Ovulation typically occurs 14 days before the start of your next period (not 14 days after your last period began). If your cycle is 28 days, you ovulate on day 14. If your cycle is 30 days, you ovulate on day 16.
The fertility window is the span in which intercourse can lead to pregnancy، the 5 days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself, roughly 6 days total. Sperm can survive up to 5 days inside the reproductive tract, while the egg lives only 24 hours after release.
A new cycle starts on the first day of menstrual bleeding. To predict your next period, add your cycle length (usually 21–35 days) to the start date of your last period.
Not necessarily. A one- or two-day variation between cycles is normal. But if the gap regularly exceeds 7 days, or you miss 3 consecutive periods without pregnancy, see a gynecologist for evaluation.
No. Avoiding the fertility window is not a reliable contraception method even for regular cycles، failure rates reach 25%. For safe prevention, use a modern medical method after consulting a physician.
