Quick conversion using the approximate formula
To convert between years only (without day and month):
- Hijri → Gregorian:
G ≈ H × 0.97 + 622 - Gregorian → Hijri:
H ≈ (G − 622) × 1.03
Example: 1447 AH ≈ 1447 × 0.97 + 622 ≈ 2025/2026 CE

Common Mistakes
1. Relying on unofficial websites
Some websites use a different calendar than Umm al-Qura, producing a gap of one or two days. For official use، documents, contracts, government appointments، rely only on Umm al-Qura.
2. Confusing when the day begins in each calendar
In the Hijri calendar, the day starts at sunset (not midnight). That is why "1 Ramadan" effectively appears at maghrib on the preceding Gregorian day in astronomical tables.
3. Hijri months are not a fixed length
Each Hijri month is either 29 or 30 days, set by moon sighting in religious practice (and by astronomical calculation in Umm al-Qura). Converting a mid-month date can therefore differ by a day between sources.
When does precise conversion matter?
- Official contracts: The date is written in the calendar adopted by the issuing authority.
- National ID: The Hijri date of birth is fixed for life، verify its conversion carefully.
- Medical appointments: Some hospitals schedule appointments in Hijri; verify before booking.
- Exam dates (Qudurat / Tahsili): The Education & Training Evaluation Commission publishes dates in both calendars.
