What Month Is It Today? Live Hijri & Gregorian Date (Umm al-Qura)
Check what month and day it is right now in Saudi Arabia in both the Gregorian and Umm al-Qura Hijri calendars — month number, name, weekday, and days left in the month.
What you're looking at
The tool shows today's date in Riyadh time using both calendars: Gregorian (solar) and Hijri (lunar, per Umm al-Qura). Each card gives you three things: day number, month name, and month number from 1 to 12. Below the two cards, a single summary line answers the most common question directly: "what's today's date?"
The Hijri day begins at sunset the previous Gregorian day, not at midnight. So if you open this page after maghrib in Saudi Arabia, the Hijri date you see is what many traditional almanacs would print for tomorrow in Gregorian terms. The tool follows Umm al-Qura's rule automatically.
Gregorian months in order
| # | Name (Arabic) | Name (English) | Days | |---|---|---|---| | 1 | يناير | January | 31 | | 2 | فبراير | February | 28 / 29 | | 3 | مارس | March | 31 | | 4 | أبريل | April | 30 | | 5 | مايو | May | 31 | | 6 | يونيو | June | 30 | | 7 | يوليو | July | 31 | | 8 | أغسطس | August | 31 | | 9 | سبتمبر | September | 30 | | 10 | أكتوبر | October | 31 | | 11 | نوفمبر | November | 30 | | 12 | ديسمبر | December | 31 |
A common Gregorian year is 365 days; a leap year is 366 days (one day added to February). Leap-year rule: divisible by 4 and not by 100, or divisible by 400. So 2024 is a leap year, 1900 is not, 2000 is.
Hijri months in order
| # | Name | Notes | |---|---|---| | 1 | Muharram | Islamic New Year; Ashura on the 10th | | 2 | Safar | — | | 3 | Rabi’ al-Awwal | Mawlid (12th, according to most) | | 4 | Rabi’ al-Thani (Rabi’ al-Akhir) | — | | 5 | Jumada al-Ula | — | | 6 | Jumada al-Akhirah (al-Thaniya) | — | | 7 | Rajab | One of the four sacred months | | 8 | Sha’ban | Immediately before Ramadan | | 9 | Ramadan | The month of fasting | | 10 | Shawwal | Eid al-Fitr on the 1st | | 11 | Dhu al-Qi’dah | One of the four sacred months | | 12 | Dhu al-Hijjah | Hajj, Day of Arafah (9th), Eid al-Adha (10th) |
A Hijri month is 29 or 30 days. A Hijri year is typically 354 days (355 in a lunar leap year). In Saudi Arabia, month starts are set by the Umm al-Qura astronomical calculation and confirmed by moon sighting where required.
Why does Ramadan shift each year?
The ~11-day gap between the lunar and solar years means every Hijri month advances by roughly 11 days on the Gregorian calendar each year. Over about 33 years, Ramadan completes a full cycle through all seasons. A quick view:
- 2024 CE: Ramadan started in March (spring).
- 2025 CE: Ramadan advanced to late February.
- 2030 CE: Ramadan is expected in January (winter).
- 2035 CE: Ramadan returns to around November.
That is why an older Saudi may recall fasting in the peak of summer heat as a child and in the cold of winter as an adult — both are literally true, roughly 17 years apart.
How this page computes the date
We use your browser's Intl.DateTimeFormat API with the islamic-umalqura option, set to the Asia/Riyadh time zone. Every modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) ships with the same official Umm al-Qura data published by KACST at the official Umm al-Qura site. No server, no internet connection, no data ever leaves your device.
This means the tool is day-accurate through 1500 AH (~2076 CE) and does not rely on the approximate lunar-year formula that many other websites use.
