Filing an Insurance Claim 2026: Car Accidents, Property, Health — Step by Step
Practical guide to filing an insurance claim in Saudi Arabia — car accidents, fires, floods, theft, health insurance, required documents, processing times, and appealing rejection.
An insurance claim is the moment that tests what you paid premiums for. Insurers are legally required to pay, but your procedures determine how fast and how much. This guide walks four common cases: car accidents, home fires/damage, theft, and health insurance.
General rule: everything documented with photos and paperwork is processed fast. Everything relying on "your word" is delayed or rejected.
Car accident insurance claim
Steps at the scene
| # | Step | Why | |---|---|---| | 1 | Don't move the cars unless there's a safety need | Najm needs the scene as it happened | | 2 | Call Najm (920005145) | Early reporting saves time | | 3 | Photograph: both cars, scene, plates, damage on both sides, any signage, the road | Visual evidence that cannot be manipulated | | 4 | Request the Najm report — save the reference | The report is the basis of the claim | | 5 | Exchange details with the other party | Plate number, phone, insurer, policy | | 6 | Do not sign any admission of fault at the scene | Fault determination is Najm's job, not the parties |
Filing the claim with the insurer
Within 24 hours of the accident:
- Call your insurer: the number is on your policy. Report the accident and Najm report number.
- Download their app or open their site: open a new claim.
- Upload documents:
- Najm report.
- Photos of the car and accident.
- Copy of the valid licence.
- Copy of the valid Istimara.
- Copy of the insurance policy.
- Filled claim form (they provide it).
- Insurer assigns an approved workshop: bring the car there.
- Damage assessment: an insurer's representative inspects and issues a cost report.
- Repair or cash settlement per your policy.
Official timelines
- The insurer must respond within 15 working days of receiving all documents.
- Workshop repair typically takes 2 weeks to 2 months depending on damage type.
- Cash settlement if chosen: 7-21 days after value agreement.
Mistakes that hurt your claim
- Leaving the scene before Najm: counts as fleeing, raises your fault %.
- Repairing the car before insurer approval: unapproved repair costs won't be reimbursed.
- Settling privately with the other party: you have no authority to determine fault.
- Delaying document submission by a week: gives grounds for delaying the response.
Home insurance claim — fire and flood
Electrical fires, floods, and water leaks are leading causes of home damage. If your home is insured:
Steps immediately after the incident
- Stop the danger first: electricity, gas, water — before photographing.
- Call Civil Defence (998) for fires. Safety first.
- Photograph damage before any repair: every room, every damaged item, every corner.
- Save purchase receipts if possible: for appliances and expensive furniture.
- Don't discard damaged items: the insurance assessor needs to inspect them.
Filing the claim
- Within 48 hours of the incident, contact the insurer.
- Civil Defence report: print from their site or obtain on the spot.
- Detailed photos of the scene.
- Damage list: prepare a table of every damaged item and estimated value.
- Insurer sends an assessor: inspects and sets the payout value.
- Objecting to the assessment: allowed — request a second assessment by an independent expert.
Important note: many home policies exclude floods, or damages from negligence (like non-approved electrical connections). Read your policy before relying on it.
Theft claim
For cars, homes, and contents:
Steps
- Immediate police report (999): the official theft report is the basis of any claim.
- Detailed list of stolen items with purchase receipts or older photos.
- Police investigation report roughly a week later.
- File the claim with the insurer with all documents.
- Insurer investigation: may send a representative for inspection and questioning.
- Payout decision: typically 30-60 days.
Warning: comprehensive insurance usually covers theft. Third-party doesn't. Home insurance "comprehensive with contents" covers it partially or fully.
Health insurance claim
Two main paths
1) Standard case — direct via card:
- Go to an in-network hospital/clinic.
- Show insurance card + ID.
- Service delivered without payment (except co-pay if any).
- Insurer pays the hospital directly.
2) Exception case — pay then reimbursement:
- Out-of-network clinic or a foreign country.
- You pay first and keep receipts.
- Submit to insurer: receipts, medical report, prescriptions, bank account details.
- Insurer pays you part or all per the policy.
Pre-approval requests
Some procedures need insurer approval before execution: elective surgeries, expensive imaging (MRI, CT), pregnancy and delivery, special medications. If you pay without approval, the insurer may deny reimbursement.
Appealing denied coverage
- Insurer sends a written rejection with reason.
- You may appeal to the insurer's medical committee with additional medical justification.
- If appeal denied, escalate to the Council of Health Insurance (CCHI) via cchi.gov.sa → Complaints.
When to file a complaint against the insurer
A SAMA complaint succeeds if:
- The insurer delayed more than 15 working days without justification.
- Rejected the claim without a written reason.
- Requested impossible or unreasonable documents.
- Valued damage below its actual worth.
- Pressured you to accept a partial payout.
How to file a SAMA complaint:
- Open sama.gov.sa → "Customer Complaints."
- Sign in with Absher.
- State the dispute details + documents + policy number.
- SAMA requires the insurer to respond within 10 working days.
Committee for Insurance Disputes at the Ministry of Justice: last resort, for major disputes. Litigation takes months, but the judgment is binding.
Tips for dealing better with the insurer
- Keep a formal tone: no emotion — every contact is documented.
- Correspond by email when possible: leaves a documented trail.
- Save reference numbers: every number you receive, save it.
- Don't describe the accident in words implying your fault: fault determination is Najm's/police's job.
- Read your contract annually: coverage sometimes changes on renewal.
