Saudi VAT Calculator 2026: Add or Extract 15% VAT

Add 15% VAT to an amount or extract it from a VAT-inclusive price using ZATCA's own formula, with worked examples and a clear list of what the tool does not do.

The easiest mistake when extracting VAT from a VAT-inclusive price is to multiply by 15%. Try it on SAR 1,150: you get 172.50, but the actual VAT is 150. That is SAR 22.50 wrong on one invoice, and it compounds line by line. The reason is that ZATCA charges the 15% on the price before VAT, so the inclusive amount equals 115% of that price, not 100%.

The calculator below works both ways and shows the formula it used under the result.

The two official formulas

ZATCA's guideline states that the 15% basic rate applies to supplies made from 1 July 2020, and it writes down two ways to calculate the tax:

You haveFormula
The price before VATVAT = price × 15%
The price including VATVAT = inclusive amount × 15/115

The fraction 15/115 equals 3/23. After extracting the tax: price before VAT = inclusive amount − VAT.

Worked examples

Each row was computed with these same formulas and rounded to two decimals:

InputVATThe other figure
SAR 1,000 before VAT150.00Total 1,150.00
SAR 1,150 inclusive150.00Before VAT 1,000.00
SAR 2,300 inclusive300.00Before VAT 2,000.00
SAR 100 inclusive13.04Before VAT 86.96

The last row shows the rounding: 100 × 15/115 is 13.0434…, displayed as 13.04. Note it is not 15, which is what "15% of one hundred" suggests.

What does not carry 15%

The guideline itself says the amendment does not touch zero-rated or exempt supplies. For zero-rating it mentions exports of goods and services, international transport, qualifying medicines and medical equipment, and investment metals. And from 4 October 2020, real-estate supplies made by transferring ownership or the right of disposal as owner are exempt, following the amendment to paragraph (1) of Article 30 of the Implementing Regulations.

That is why the tool has a second option, 0%. It does not decide which rate applies to your supply: classification is the supplier's responsibility, and the authority on it is ZATCA. If you are registered and unsure, ask before issuing the invoice, not after.

Limits of the tool

  • It does not issue invoices. A tax invoice comes from an e-invoicing system that meets ZATCA's requirements; see our e-invoicing and VAT guide.
  • It does not compute input-VAT deduction or the periodic return.
  • It does not handle discounts or multiple lines at different prices. Calculate each line separately.
  • It does not compute zakat. VAT and zakat are different things; for a company's zakat base use the corporate zakat calculator.

Common mistakes

Mixing up "15% of the amount" and "15% on top of the price". If the advertised price is inclusive, the VAT is already inside it and must not be added again. ZATCA's guideline requires retail prices to reflect the VAT-inclusive value of the supply.

Rounding too early. Round at the end, not in the middle. The error shows up when you repeat the calculation across dozens of items.

Assuming everything carries 15%. Qualifying medicines and exports, for example, are zero-rated, and property transferred by ownership is exempt. When in doubt, ask.

15% on supplies at the standard rate since 1 July 2020, up from 5%. That is what ZATCA's guideline on the rate amendment states. Zero-rated and exempt supplies are not affected by the change.
Multiply the inclusive amount by 15/115 (the same fraction as 3/23). ZATCA's guideline states this formula explicitly. Example: SAR 1,150 inclusive means SAR 150 of VAT and SAR 1,000 before VAT.
Because the 15% is charged on the price before VAT, not after it. 1,150 × 15% gives 172.50, which overstates the actual VAT by SAR 22.50. The correct figure is SAR 150.
Neither carries 15%, but the guideline treats them differently. Zero-rated supplies include exports, international transport, qualifying medicines and medical equipment, and investment metals. Exempt supplies limit the supplier's right to deduct input VAT in full. For your exact classification, ask ZATCA.
Real-estate supplies made by transferring ownership or the right of disposal as owner have been exempt since 4 October 2020, per the amendment to Article 30 of the Implementing Regulations as announced in ZATCA's guideline. Other real-estate dealings have their own rules, so check with ZATCA.
The tool rounds the VAT to two decimals and derives the other figure from it. If an invoicing system rounds each line separately and then sums them, a small difference can appear. The tax invoice is the reference; the tool is for estimating.
No. A tax invoice must come from an e-invoicing system that meets ZATCA's requirements. This tool only computes a number; it saves nothing and generates no approved code.
